The undergravel filter IS a legit filter – it’s bascially a bio filter and the bacteria grows on the gravel.

To the person using it for a goldfish – please do some research on goldfish this is NOT an appropriate goldfish tank!

I bought this aquarium after reading online that my goldfish may be in “distress” in his small bowl. (Whatever that means).

I really like it, but it has a couple issues.

It takes up much less space than a traditional rectangular aquarium. I like the colored lights. The colors don’t change automatically. Once you set a color it stays until you change it. The lights come up from underneath the aquarium spray out through the cylinder in the middle of the tank. However, I didn’t like the cylinder, because it restricted the space that the fish have to swim. I took it out and replaced it with a small cylinder, which was the container for one of my baby’s toys. This changed the way the color sprayed out. The color looks nicer with the large cylinder that was provided, but the small cylinder that I put in looks nice too.

If you don’t use a cylinder, you will not be able to see the color, since the rocks on the bottom of the tank will cover the color lights.

I also bought (and suggest) a real pump filter. But it must be a slender one, because the curvature of the tank won’t allow most filters. I bought an Aquarium Systems Duetto Mini. It works well.

*Update – I re-inserted the original tall cylinder, and one day, found my fish swam down the cylinder and became stuck! He had to be helped out of there. The water level has to be lower than the top of the cylinder to avoid this from happening again. Or the bubbler has to be kept inside of this cylinder (which then keeps the air bubbles only at the top). The engineers should redesign the cyliner to be a closed cylinder, and maybe much shorter to give the fish more space to swim.

This is a great aquarium but I would recommend investing in a small filter system to keep it clean and the undergravel filter is not a filter at all its a plastic bottom with small holes in it. I honestly haven’t figured out the use or reason for it. It doesn’t seem to be doing anything extra. That being said the colors are very cool all though I am not able to get the green one, the red, blue, yellow, orange, and purple are very nice and cool to look at plus its enough light to see my fish at night but not enough to bother them like a regular light does.

This tank is awesome and it’s absolutely beautiful, you mustinvest in this. It’s easy to put together and the different color light settings is the best I’ve seen. It’s very quiet and my 3 fancy guppies love it – this is a must have if you are looking for a small tank.
